Official AXISdapter Thread: SIXAXIS/DS3 Hacking Made Easy (ONLY PACK A avail)

AXISdapter is out of production and will most likely not be made anymore. The ShinJN Tech Shop has been retired as I have been focused primarily on Level Up.

I have (5) A kits and (2) B kits left. If you would like to purchase these, please e-mail me at jimmy.nguyen (at) levelup-series (dot) com

If you're like me and find that hacking the SIXAXIS/DS3 pad a big PITA, then this thread is for you. For months I have been trying to figure out a way to ease the pain of soldering wires onto the SIXAXIS board. I've gutted a broken one to try different tricks but just gave up. Now I may have a solution that makes hacking the SIXAXIS/DS3 as easy as Toodles' Cthulhu.

Inspired by Toodles and his awesome Cthulhu board and my determination to have a wireless PS3 joystick, I have created the AXISdapter.

This board will only work with SIXAXIS and DS3's that have the 20 position connector (FFC connector) as seen in the picture! I was informed there are later versions of the DS3 that do not use this connector =( Please make sure your PCB uses the 20 position FFC connector before considering your purchase.

How to tell if your Dual Shock 3 has the 20 position FFC connector (thanks to purplearms):

1. Small PCB size: 1.8" x 1.8"
2. Uses the same ribbon cable connector as the SIXAXIS
3. SIXAXIS and adapter board are joined using a flat flex cable
4. The adapter board has two pairs of solder holes to add the resistors for the different grounds
5. Screw terminals (uses 3.5mm pitch ones to keep board small)
6. No need to use the original membrane PCB
7. Each connection is labeled so you know which wire goes where

It's as simple as that. You just join the two boards with the flat flex cable, attach the wires from your joystick/buttons to the adapter board, and you're ready to go.

Q: Why so much for something so small/simple?
A: Well, the prices were calculated so I can at least break even and possibly get more funds to create a second batch as well as buy the components for the new batch. I'm not making much to be honest.

Q: Does the ribbon cable connector fit in a Dualshock 1 series A? How about the DS2?
A: Right out of the box, no it won't. You "can" make it work with any PCB that uses the flat flex cable connector. But what you have to do is cut and fold the extra connections on the flat flex cable to match the number of connections for that connector. I don't promote the idea but what you do with the board is your choice after you get it. But just a warning, the flat flex cable is the most expensive component. If you mess it up, I won't be held responsible! Also, if you need to add a resistor between any of the pins, you can! You have access to all 20 connections and with the screw terminals you can add a resistor between any of the two pins with ease. If you're not using screw terminals, you have big enough holes to solder a wire and the resistor. But as I said before, this board's focus is the SIXAXIS. With creativity, you can rock it out on any PCB with the FFC connector.

Q: Does the board have access to R3 and L3?
A: Nope. The adapter board is simply an extension of the ribbon connector on the PCB. All it does is give you an easy access/no solder solution.

Q: Don't overcharge me on international shipping!
A: Well, not much I can do there. It's either Priority Mail, Express Mail, or regular first class. Waiting time is up to you depending on what service you choose. The faster, the more expensive.

Q: Can I use this adapter board with other third-party controllers?
A: The board was designed for Official Sony branded SIXAXIS and DS3s (early models). If your third party controller happens to have the 20 position FFC connector, it should work just fine.

THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT EVERYONE!
